126. How to… be kind.

I get it. I really do. Sometimes, you just need to say what’s on your mind. Sometimes, what’s on your mind isn’t always the nicest thing in the world. We can’t all be Mary Poppins all the time…

But we can think before we speak and act. We can take a moment to remember how it makes us feel when we find ourselves confronted with words that have the power to cut us. We can take a second to remind ourselves that the world is a dark enough place already, and that there’s no need to feed into that darkness. We can take that time to recognize that our words have power, our actions have power, and that those around us are going through things we may never hear a word about… and we can try to be just a little bit nicer to one another.

Kindness is the one gift that everyone can give. There’s no social status attached to it, no price tag. It’s free to be a decent person, a kind person…and this is a gift that really does keep on giving. It’s a gift that can be learned from, passed on, and appreciated for what it is and what it means. I think a lot of people need to remember that. You don’t have to shout into the void. You don’t have to contribute to the negativity in the world. We have it in spades already. Be a force of light instead of screaming into the darkness. Be kind to one another.

I see more and more ugliness every day, and more and more people contributing to it, and adding more and more weight to this already profound load we’re all carrying around on our shoulders. We can’t do it forever, guys. Trust me. I’m one candle away from a good crumble, so I’m going to protect that flame with all that I have because there’s no reason to blow it out yet. We’re all exhausted, and yet we’re wasting more and more energy spewing this ugliness around.

Just stop it. Stop it and breathe and be good to one another.

You’ll feel better, they’ll feel better… Trust me.
