227. How to… wake up.

Y’all… there is not enough coffee in the entire state this morning.

Last night was my first night in the house dealing with “oh shit” storms.

In Nova-land, I categorize storms in three ways:

Level 1 – “Oh, meh.” – A minor inconvenience. Sugar dissolves in water, after all.

Level 2 – “Oh, my!” – It looks bad, but I don’t have to deal with it.

Level 3 – “Oh, shit.” – Danger, Will Robinson. DEF-CON 5, “is the dog going to blow away if I let her outside to pee?”, thunder and lightning, eeeeeeverything is frightning. A whole bucket full of nopes.

Last night started as a level 2 and upgraded to a level 3 when I realized several things:

• Lightning bad. Power flickering scary. Nova no-likey.
• I own this house. I am responsible if Mother Nature rips the roof off of it.
• Tornado watch. *

(*A side note here for those global-warming-does-not-exist people, but tornadoes are rare in mid-December here because it’s usually freaking cold. But it’s not been cold. It’s been fluctuating between below freezing and 65 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the day and time)

It’s actually still storming as I’m writing this. It’s past 11AM local time. There was one tornado last night that was on the ground for over two hundred miles, and Arkansas, Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky were all hit. You’re going to read a lot about the nursing home collapse in Arkansas, but an entire town was leveled in Kentucky, people are missing (including children), and the death toll continues to rise. We got lucky in Indiana, and I say that even as my power has continued to flicker and I am listening to the thunder and watching the wind bat around the neighbor’s kids’ stuff in their yard.

My head is pounding, and it was really hard to get up this morning because I didn’t sleep well last night, but when I saw what had happened, it kind of put a lot of things into perspective. Hold your loved ones tight today. Wake up, have your coffee, greet the day, and do what you can to make it a good one, k? K.
