One of the things we all love most about Second Life is the ability to change ourselves whenever we want to. There’s no strict 22-step diet plan to follow, no horribly expensive trip to the mall or the local salon. We simply search, click, add, and voila! We have a new look, a new hair color. Hell, we change our actual skeletal structure when we get bored simply because we can. And why not? When I’m having an unfortunate day, one of my favorite things to do is make Nova look completely different simply because I can. Nova’s world is something over which I have complete control at all times, so when real life is giving me a kick in the face, I turn to SL, and I give Nova a bit of a face lift.
But there’s something important to keep in mind here. If you’re like me, giving yourself a little update probably makes you feel better on the bad days, but it’s a temporary fix. When you’re having a bad day – or a bad couple days – sometimes, that feeling that lies somewhere between “%^!# this” and “not today, Satan” can linger. And it will linger in spite of the pretty new hair you’ve got, or the new skin, or the new clothes. And that’s when you need to focus your attention somewhere else. Sometimes, this can be as simple as hitting the X button for a few days. Sometimes, it means leaning on those who love you the most – the ones who are still there, who have remained to help you celebrate the good days and are silently (or not-so-silently) cheering you on during the bad ones.
Why? Because they’ve been there. They know that pressing the proverbial reset button doesn’t always work, and they’re on your side no matter what. They don’t expect you to reinvent the wheel. They just want to see you come out the other side of things feeling a bit better than you went in.
