166. How to… appreciate what you’ve got.

I’ve said it before… and I’ll never stop saying it. There are some people who come into your life at exactly the right times. They’re just there one day – seemingly so suddenly, when you need them the most. Not everyone who comes into your life is going to be there for good, or even for the right reasons, but the point is they’re there, and when they’re there, you’re not alone. They build you up, they make you laugh, make you smile, even make you cry. And when they’re there? You’re not alone. You have someone – even if they’re only there for a time – who is in your corner. And you have to appreciate that. You have to, because there may come a time when they’re not there anymore. So many talk about how Second Life is simply a game. I suppose that’s why some are able to hurt people the way they do – they can turn them on or off like a television program and not think twice because it’s just pixels, right?

Except it’s not. When someone comes into your life, when they brighten your day even just for an instant, it shouldn’t matter how you met them. It doesn’t matter. Appreciate them. Tell them how much that brief moment of sunshine they gave you meant, because nothing is ever guaranteed. And that sucks. That can be a hard pill to swallow in either life.
