158. If you take a picture, it’ll last longer…

We’ve all heard that one, haven’t we? I think in my case, I hear it more as a sarcastic remark than anything, but it has some merits beyond that if you really give it a moment of thought. Pictures are our way of documenting things. They are, at their base, nothing more than a pictographic record of a single moment in time. But… the thing about time is that in the time it takes you to blink, that moment has passed, and you can’t get it back. So we developed this way of essentially capturing that moment – of freezing it so that we can look back on it and we can remember. And there’s nothing sarcastic about that.

As bloggers, many of us take photos to show off the lovely items our favorite creators dream up. Case and point would be what I’m wearing in today’s photo – a new dress from UNA, coming to the Kinky event. We take our photos and we play with windlights and light boxes and pose huds, and we hunt through our inventory to find the perfect accessories and we take 40 versions of the same picture… because in Second Life, we have the opportunity to freeze time even more than we do in real life. In Second Life, we can recreate that moment we would have otherwise lost if we blinked too quickly in the real world, or didn’t press the shutter button at the right time. And we do that here in SL because we want our photos to look nice. We want them to represent us and the creators for whom we champion ourselves.

But even in SL, the point still stands. These are still our little moments – our little memories to look back on later. And we should keep them. We should cherish them. We should create more of them. Some of the most beautiful photographs I’ve seen of late have actually been pieces created by other bloggers this year. Photographs from a game. Perhaps that’s because we do have the opportunity to play with the idea of that fleeting moment not being so fleeting after all. Or perhaps we simply recognize that one day, these photos, even from this game, are going to be little memories that we can smile back on later. Little snippets of our day that will remind us of what we were doing, or how we were feeling, or what we were capable of.

2020 may have kicked all of us in the face. There may be so much about it that we want to forget, especially as we inch closer and closer to the new year… but there’s also probably at least a few things we want to remember. A few things we want to keep close to our hearts. New friends, for instance. New experiences. Good or bad, they are a learning experience, just as this whole year has been for many of us. The world has shifted – in Second Life and in Real Life – and we’ve all changed with it, too. And I do want to remember that. Some of it, anyway… So, I’ll keep taking pictures. Not out of a sense of duty or a moment of inner sarcasm bubbling up to the surface, but because there are some things – some wonderful things even in this dumpster fire of a year – that I want to remember in both worlds. And I encourage you to do the same. Document your time here just as you would in the real world. Giggle and snap pictures when the fire department has to show up to your SL family’s Thanksgiving celebration. Hit that snapshot button when you’ve built something beautiful. When you and your friends are gathered together. When you’ve discovered something new and amazing. Hit it as often as you want, because one day, just like in real life, you’re going to want to look back at some of those times… and having that photo is going to be a lot more reliable than a mere memory inside your head.
