New things are scary, guys. Almost as scary as 2020 has been… though, admittedly, I wouldn’t go quite that far. Still, I think sometimes, fear makes us stuck. It’s not that we don’t want to act. It’s not that we don’t want things to change, or that we can’t advocate for ourselves. It’s the fear attached to all of it that keeps us frozen. It keeps us from being able to do anything. And I’m sure if we don’t all already feel that way now, we’ve probably felt that way at least once or twice in our lives. In fact, I’d wager a bet that if you say you haven’t, you’re probably lying to yourself.
The thing is, sometimes, we’re so busy worrying ourselves about the things we think are in our way that we don’t focus on the power that we do have. Sometimes, all it takes to do something different or start walking down a new path is a deep breath and a leap.
More scary stuff. I know, I know…
But sometimes, the stuff that is waiting in the unknown isn’t scary at all. Sometimes it’s beautiful and refreshing and amazing and all the things you thought you’d always miss out on. Sometimes, it’s a celebration. But you’ll never know that if you don’t take the chance.
I think this year has robbed us of our gumption. It’s stolen our hope and replaced it with something that we can’t recognize. And we deserve to have it back. We deserve to open that door we’ve been standing in front of and finally catch a glimpse of what’s beyond it. Instead of focusing on the negatives, look for the positives. They can be hard to find sometimes, but they’re there.
Think of it this way? Remember how terrified we all were when mesh first came out? “Oh dear gods, we’ll have to buy all this new stuff and my [insert random thing here] won’t work anymore, and I can’t figure out how to do this and that, and what do I do if this doesn’t fit right…” Blah blah. Now we all laugh and joke about our horrible duck-feet and how we thought we were hot shit back in the day. Now everything is a little easier, from changing our clothes to taking photos in world. Now, most of us wouldn’t know what to do without all of our scary mesh things and our fun appliers, etc. I saw Nova without her mesh head the other day and almost had a heart attack, ya’ll.
And maybe that’s a silly example, but the point holds true. Scary things aren’t always bad things. Taking a leap doesn’t always mean you’ll land in a pile of rocks and break your legs. Opening a new door doesn’t have to mean confronting a monster that lives on the other side.
The biggest middle finger we can give to this whole year is to stop waiting for things to change, take our power back, find our courage, and start making the changes ourselves.
