110. How to… wait for it…

The general rule of doing anything new is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. And, of course, along the way, to expect that anything and everything you could possibly imagine could go wrong will do so. To avoid curling into a fetal position and crying while sucking your thumb and imagining a time before you were old enough to first utter the words, “I can’t wait until I’m an adult,” you have to learn to roll with it a little bit. Now, that sounds a lot easier than it is, but trust me, y’all… it’s worth it. Sometimes, life just wants to punch you in the tit and knock everything off balance, and the way to survive those moments is to do something you used to do when you were a kid: pretend. Pretend it doesn’t bother you. Deflect. Go with plan B. Stop. Re-group. Try again.

Repeat. For eternity.

Life, and particularly adulthood, is a series of tests most assuredly designed by a skilled sadist who wants nothing more than for us to break down, cry, and use the safe word so we can go back to safe, boring, not-even-remotely-groundbreaking monotony. Because it’s comfortable there, isn’t it? Don’t do it. Not a single person alive today nor a single person who has ever lived was put on this earth to do nothing but work, sleep, and pay bills until the day they die. We were meant to live – to do extraordinary things in the space of our ordinary lives. To define ourselves as individuals. Second Life allows us to do that on another plane, to another degree, but even there, we can be met with challenges: things we’d rather not deal with, people we wish we could punch through our computer screen, lag, server issues, more lag…

But we keep coming back to it, don’t we? We keep coming back because we recognize that we don’t have to deal with those things – we can teleport away. We don’t have to deal with those people – there’s a block button. Lag and server issues? They’re temporary. They go away, and then we can enjoy the game again.

Apply those same principles in real life, and go out and do that amazing thing you’ve wanted to do for so long. Just make sure that you bring a hard hat. The mountains you’ll face in real life are a helluva lot harder to climb than they are in Second Life, but the view from the top is so worth it, y’all.
