98. How to… strike a pose.

There’s something to be said about Second Life, if for no other reason than the fact that you can create just about anything. I, for example, create poses. I didn’t create the one in this particular photo – it’s one of Foxcity’s, with whom I am mildly obsessed right now – but the point is, we can be anything, do anything, and put ourselves in just about any situation imaginable. And we can do so without fear that we’ll fall on our face or ruin our clothes.

I’ve been thinking about this more and more as I have started to work with my first client at the agency. He’s never had an agent before, and explaining everything to him thus far has basically been a mantra of: “Here’s what we’ll do, and if that doesn’t go well, here’s option B.”

It’s led me to the conclusion that life – in all of its forms – is nothing but a long-standing game of trial-and-error in which we, the players, are constantly trying to make it to the next stage. Not like Jumanji, as the internet memes of the time suggest, but more like Jenga, maybe? See, you’ve got this tower of blocks, and your goal is to not be the one who makes it fall over… but every time you try something new, you’re doing so on a whim. If I remove this block, I don’t think the tower will fall, but I don’t know that I’m right. And you try it… because that’s the point of the game. Whether we’re talking about games, or making new friends, opening a new business, setting out on a new adventure… all of these are things at which there is a probability we could fail. But we do them anyway.

Why?

Because the number of times we fail doesn’t really matter. It’s the time that we succeed that we’re looking forward to, that we’re chasing after. And when we do succeed, we can move on to trying bigger and better things, and we start the process all over again.

That stuff in the middle? That’s just us, smiling for the camera and trying our damnedest. Pretending we know what we’re doing.

And you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that.
