75. How to… make your mark.

When we’re little, we hear so many stories that start with “Once upon a time…”

We hear about princesses locked in tall towers, dragons, and knights on white horses, love at first sight. So many things that make the world seem so wonderful. And we want those things. We want our very own story, and most of us, whether we want to admit it or not want a very specific ending to that story, too. The kind we heard about growing up. In the publishing world, particularly when it comes to romance, we call those the HEA books – Happily Ever After. And the truth of it is, those endings sell more books than any cliffhanger, than any misguided but handsome antagonist, or any hero or heroine, regardless of how wonderful they seem on paper. They sell because that is the fantasy. It’s what people want.

And one of the reasons we want that so bad is because as we grow up, we stop believing. We stop believing in princesses and magic and knights on white horses. As we grow up, the world around us takes on a different focus, and the magic we once saw in it as a wide-eyed little girl (or boy) sitting in front of grandma’s rocking chair as she weaved the tale for us fades away.

We begin to ask questions. Like: Why can’t the princess save herself? How is it that saving her means she has to love him? What makes him such a good guy if he obviously had an ulterior motive to saving her to begin with? What if one of the characters had made a different choice? Would the ending change? Would it still be such a happy story if we really looked at it? If we took it apart piece by piece and examined it for what it was?

We grow up, and we struggle with these questions, and we realize that people on the whole are flawed, that some of them are just plain cruel, and that love isn’t always right, and certainly isn’t always easy, and we forget about that little girl with the wide eyes and a million dreams and a powerful imagination. We forget a part of ourselves, and we lock it away, and sometimes, we lose the key.

The truth is you don’t have to be a princess or a knight to make a mark on someone’s life. You don’t have to find your HEA ending right away. Nothing is ever going to be perfect. Sometimes, the most amazing things, the most wonderful blessings we have in life, come from people and situations that we never expected, in places we never thought we’d find them.

Sometimes, making a mark on someone doesn’t have to mean saving them from the dragon. Sometimes, it’s simply offering a shoulder to cry on when someone needs it. Befriending someone new. Showing compassion and understanding. Sometimes, a simple “Hello,” can brighten someone’s day more than anything material. And that’s it. That’s your happily ever after right there. It’s living your best life, being the best possible version of yourself and sharing that with the world. It’s learning to see the magic again long after you’re certain it’s faded away. It’s understanding that sometimes, even though you can’t see something, even though you can’t touch it, it’s real, and it’s true, and it’s amazing.

Everything else? Well, that’s just icing on the cake.
