67. How to… be the duck in a flock of flamingos.

I had to do it, guys. First of all, I love both ducks and flamingos. They are adorable and fabulous in all ways, but this retexture of the Chrissy top from Vinyl for FLF just kind of sealed the deal for me. But… we’re not going to talk about that. Not exactly, anyway. We’re going to run with the metaphor here. You’ve probably heard a few different versions of this idea of “going with the herd” so to speak – and it has its merits, especially when it comes to Second Life. We’re all operating our avatars from behind a screen, and the whole idea of SL is that we can be and do what we want – within certain limits of course.

For some, that means being the best possible version of themselves. It means letting the side of themselves that they have to keep locked up for whatever reason out of its proverbial box. And let’s be honest here – in one way or another, that’s why we all joined. We wanted to have fun. We wanted to dress up our little dolls, play vampire or cowboy or cyborg even. We wanted to create and share that little bit of ourselves with other people. We wanted that tiny escape from the pressures of the real world that happens every time we hit that ‘log in’ button.

And like I said the other day – I think that some of us have a tendency to forget that sometimes. We exchange our best selves for the version that will please others, the version that still works too much and doesn’t get out and has so much going on that it’s a wonder they can function at all. And that’s… not fair.

Be a duck, guys.

People who judge you don’t matter in the grand scheme of things, much in the same way that the idiots who bothered you in high school don’t matter any more now that you’re an adult. You’ve all got new lives, and those people back then? The ones who bullied you because you didn’t fit inside their box? They are no longer a factor in your universe. Those types of people usually operate that way for one of two reasons: envy, or jealousy. Neither of which is a healthy way to live. The same principle applies to Second Life – these flamingos, the ones who don’t want you to be a duck? They are inconsequential to your universe the moment you hit the ‘X’ at the top of your screen, so what’s the point? What’s the point of letting them occupy any space in your head at all? What’s the point of even entertaining the thought that their opinion of who you are and what you want to do actually matters?

I’ll tell you a secret: There isn’t one. Be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. Be the version of yourself that you want to be. And if other people don’t like it? Well, they don’t have to get into the water with you. Flamingos are wading birds anyway, y’all. They’re not known for being the best swimmers.

I’m just sayin’.
