20. How to…make new friends

Have you ever been standing in a crowded room, and there’s a thousand and one different conversations going on, and people are laughing and joking, and you, you’re literally surrounded by them, all in the thick of it, and yet you feel completely alone?

That’s me. A lot.

Sometimes I feel like I am just taking up space in someone else’s universe, like I don’t fit here and something is wrong and somewhere along the lines some wires got crossed, and I’m actually in some alternate reality just watching everyone else exist. Sometimes, I feel like I could literally spell it out, letter to pain-staking letter, and people just look right through me and keep talking like I never said anything at all. I’m so exhausted lately. The world is full of shitty people who do shitty things, people who say one thing and do another, and worse yet, people who say they are your friend and then only seem to be present and accountable for that role when it suits their own needs.

I’ve been stuck in this rut so long of “accept what is because it won’t change and trying to change it will cause conflict, and you don’t like conflict” that I’m not really sure what to do with myself sometimes. So I just keep trudging along in this sea of toxicity and hoping that I don’t get in over my head and drown in it. I’m not a very good swimmer, you see. My legs are shit in real life, so I’d be in trouble.

But you know what? Recent events have led me to realize something important. Are you ready for it? You’ll have to excuse my language, but…

Fuck that. Absolutely. Burn it with fire and put it in the trash can where it belongs with the rest of the garbage.

It’s so nice to make new friends. Everyone likes new friends. But you know what? Sometimes new friends aren’t just fun, they are necessary. They offer not only new companionship, but a new viewpoint. A new way to see things.

“But Nova, that’s redundant!”

No, it’s not. See, a new viewpoint is one thing. People can try to sell it to you, they can smile and nod and decorate it in glitter with blinking lights, but you have to open your eyes and actually look at it to understand its real worth. And sometimes, that’s hard. Sometimes, it’s hard to look at yourself and your circumstances and go, “Okay, I screwed this up, and it’s time to go back to the drawing board.” But you know what? Sometimes, that doesn’t mean you messed up. It just means that you need something different. Everyone deserves to be happy. They deserve to have that person in their life that will listen to them when they talk and not offer judgment in return. They deserve to smile and laugh and breathe a little easier. They deserve to have some of the weight lifted from their shoulders from time to time and do something fun just for the hell of it. They deserve to be heard, to be seen, and above all, to be appreciated for who and what they are.

I think that sometimes, when we find ourselves weighted down by the fog of negativity and lacking any light to get ourselves out, we forget that. We get so used to things as they are that stepping away from that feels impossible.

We need to remember that somewhere out there, someone has a flashlight, and they’re looking for us. And they’re going to shine that thing so bright that it will light our way. We just have to be willing to open our eyes and see it, because that person? That’s your person. You’ll know when you find them, because you won’t be alone anymore. You won’t feel like you’re just passing through. You won’t feel invisible.
